Half Cock

Kol Kamaruddin Harun, Zainal dan Mej Jen Fazlurrahman (R). Any other higher echelon songkok than that will be in white and worn by the KD Kawah (MSC Cook)

Towards the end of last year and during the school holidays saw many majlis kenduri kahwin be it from neighbours, saudara mara, my wife’s officemates and of course from Skots. One such majlis kenduri was held in the Dewan Seroja in MINDEF by Skot Mej Gen Dato Fazlurrahman (R). That was the second kenduri that day and I thought after courteousely wishing Dato Fazlur we just like to get together with those Skots who were in the tent beside the dewan for a cup of tea before moving on to another kenduri.  However we were coaxed or persuaded by Skot Col Kamaruddin Harun or better known as Kamaruddin Lat, ‘makanlah sikit dulu’. He is Skot 22 only surviving member who is still serving by virtue that he is the youngest and lucky to serve until the age of 60. He told me that he is no longer the Brunei defence attaché  and ‘aku je yang tinggal lagi untuk bawak kita punya banner’. During our younger days I remember fondly of Kamaruddin Lat during those days when he was the Demo Platoon Commander in PULADA while we attended the YO Tactic and Weapon course.

The true meaning among us on the above subject is associated with when you cock a gun, you are placing the hammer or bridge block in a position to fire the weapon however there are other literally meanings to it. We read Nursery Rhymes during primary school and such fables are : who killed Cock Robin and Cock and Bull story. So when somebody just said, 'you are talking cock' then the tendency is either you have 'half cock' or been talking about your grandmother's story. I can only pressumed that 'only Skots and the Armed Forces personnel can appreciate and understand', because we need not be explained the meaning of half cock.

Unlike some of you who were serving in a major unit i.e. Infantry battalion or Regiment, when I first reported to my unit upon commissioned, there was only one other officer who was the MTO. The OC was on leave, the AO attending a course and so was all the other  Platoon Commanders. Being the only subaltern, for few months I was doing practically every thing from pergi Bank Negara, draw duit untuk bayar gaji bini askar sampailah kepada bawak Convoy untuk pergi perang. So when my turn to go for courses, it’s certainly relieved me of so many burden especially those extra duties.

In the train heading south towards JB for PULADA to attend Tactic course you meet again with those familiar faces, all dressed up in civilian, carrying kit bag with their weapon all got stripped inside and everybody proudly talking about their new unit or Corps while enjoying the mee goreng at the buffet coach. When the train stops at major stations like Seremban, Tampin or Kluang, you will be anxious to see who will come on board to join you. Soon during the course we met officers of other junior and senior intakes and some became friends for life.

During the time when I attended the course, most of the DSs were Mat Salleh except for one Major Mat Maidin who always picked on the KPs like me to carry the PRC 77 radio set during exercises. I do not know for what reason, the most anyone can achieved or scored in either Weapon or Tactic course was to get B grading and even to achieve that is considered exceptional. A person picked to be the Commander in the final exercise during Tactic course was the indication that he excels above others.

So this guy from the Ranger Regiment was chosen and towards the end of the exercise he organised everybody into an ambush position expecting the enemy to approach during the night. Everything was well laid in that jungle up to that point however no 'enemy' came during the night. Very early next morning I saw that this guy seems to lose control as everybody was busy smoking and burning gocas to prepare breakfast and as though that they all were celebrating Deepavali as the DSs were not around. Then the sentry signalled to indicate that the enemies are approaching and everybody scrambled back to their position.

I saw Mat Maidin with couple of Kamaruddin Lat's Demo Platoon personnel acting as enemies walking by, seemingly pretending not to see us. I aimed my SLR right to the head of Mat Maidin while waiting for the whole column of the enemy to come into the main area where the Commander was supposed to trigger the first shot. As designated signaller, I was quite near to him when surprisingly I saw him cock his weapon and then fired, followed by everybody emptying their blanks on the enemy. Almost immediately the DS shouted for everybody to stop firing and demanded to know who cocked the weapon prior to when the shooting starts. The cocking sound was a grave mistake as far as secrecy is concerned and this guy did not have the gut to admit. He may later on become a General for that matter but I for one, do not have the respect for that idiot. So that's what happened when you half cocked your weapon.. it won't fire or in another meaning when you do something half-heartedly.

On this blissful Friday, lets take a look and read the whole ayat :

Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

The tilawat (uthlu) of the alQur’an implies to rehearsing or reciting it and publishing it abroad, reading it to ourselves, studying it to understand it as it should be studied and understood it. Meditating on it so as to accord our knowledge and life and desires with it.

Surah Toha ayat 115. Sadaqallahul ‘azim.

Aqulu qauli haza, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum ajmain, walhamdulillahi rabbil alamin. Wallahu aklam, wassalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
