Guantanamera - Kasihnya Ayah

Guantanamera - Kasihnya Ayah..

Catch and release udang galah yang bertelur semasa memancing diSungai Selangor.

Menemui Skot serta sahabat yang dihormati,

Just recently two things that brought back to me fond memories on FELDA. One of course is the listing of FGV. I was traveling down the new highway to avoid the conjestion at Sungai Buluh and saw an unfamiliar name on a sign board of Bestari Jaya. When we were in the same barrack during Pre OCTU in Sebarang Karah, Skot Zainal Baharin and knowing him, used to joke mengenai peristiwa dimasa  13 May, keadaan semasa curfew dikawasan hitam yang dihebahkan melalui radio: ‘Keadaan masih tegang diBatang Berjuntai’.

I was on the way through Sungai Panjang near Sungai Besar Selangor untuk apa lagi kalau tidak pergi memancing ugang galah. The road leads to Tanjong Malim and can pass through beberapa rancangan tanah FELDA seperti Sungai Tengi dan Sungai Dusun. That’s remind me of what I wrote some time ago. Cerita semasa susah senang ketika masih remaja dizaman persekolahan dahulu yang banyak mengimbau nostalgia dan kenangan  . Lets share it again :

The above is sasterawan negara in the making punya intro, my way to tell you an early dawn and morning scene disebuah tanah rancangan Felda yang dahulunya dikenali sebagai RKT or LKTP.

I was in Kluang to attend my nephew’s wedding at Felda Kahang Selatan, down south on the way towards Mersing. While passing through I saw the Batu Tiga army camp, flourished with golf course, recognisable from the right side of the road. A different redolent or remindful of my vivid recollection and memory. However the scenery and view of its pale coloured familiar buildings in that army camp, brings the nostalgic and the serene atmosphere of what it used to be when I was there during the time when my father was with the 6th Royal Malay Regiment before the sixties and I entered standard one in Kluang. The last time I was there was sometime in the mid 70's when I attended the Mine Warfare course. The only thing I do remember about that course was the best-catered meals.

I met with our Skot Mohamad Osman KP, who now resides in Kluang and later by coincident, Col Amin TUDM, joined us briefly. Amin was with his new wife as his previous wife Zai, who my family knew well, passed away due to cancer. Talking of demise, a day before, Maharom KP called and informed me that Nasir KP, predictably after a long illness juga telah kembali ke Rahmatullah just a few weeks back dan semoga Allah mencucuri Rahmat keatas rohnya. Few of those KPs officers that I contacted including Skot Kasmuri and Che Dan seem not to know. Col Amin, Mej (B) Maharom and Allahyarham Mej (B) Nasir were all from Intake 20. Nasir and Maharom were together with me in 20 Angkut KP when we were based in Sungai Besi during the time when we were 2Lt, immediately upon my commissioned.

Mat German or Mat Mopiko as he is fondly known to us and typical of Skot pencen, soberly talks about his misery during his service and mentioned about his poor roots before joining the army. Likewise I have heard similar plight and sorrow from other retired Skots. Maha Suci Allah dan segala segalanya adalah dari Allah, personally and with due respect, I feel many a times we are more conscious of our own, rather than to understand the feeling and suffering of others. I told one of our Skots, who sighed to me that he is now feeling the pinch out of his half colonel pension., that my father was just a WO 2 when he retired and has to tanggung six children. In this respect, I am in a mood to relate stories but not so much of to draw your interest but to record it, so to add colour with the many other write-ups that I have done for compilation and for my own memoir so my children and their children after them will be able to read and hope that they would appreciate untuk mengetahui dan menghargai akan nikmat kesenangan dan erti syukur and so, let me begin..

I was still in Form three when I got transfered to a new school at Clifford in Kuala Kangsar when my father, after serving 21 years in the army, retired and still young in his forties, joined Felda as Field Assistant (FA) at RKT Sungai Dusun in Tanjung Malim. President Soeharto visited that rancangan and was later named after him. The early years after retirement with hardly RM200 in pension and with five out of six schooling children to support, may have been real tough for him however he maintains that 'Warrant Officer' kind of outfit and flair thus earning respect among the settlers. I was practically on my own staying in the school hostel. I was given RM 20 a month i.e. RM 18 for the hostel fee for the accommodation and meals and RM 2 for my allowance and that’s to include for everything from sabun mandi to sabun basuh kain, tooth paste and perhaps buying few times of muruku or kacang putih during canteen break. Ayer paip is about the cleanest water you have then. Some of my possession in my locker was a pair of Fung Keong rubber shoe to wear all year round and a pair of altered pant belongs to my father with two pairs of school uniform, few shorts, T shirts and sehelai dua kain pelikat untuk tidur. Try telling this to your son and children.

During school term break I will go to the rancangan and take opportunity to work so to earn some and the needy pocket money. Furthermore, compared to living in my rumah papan atap rumbia, dark and sunyi of my kampung, the house in that Felda scheme was much brighter and lively and also ada Tv which of course was still in black and white with just two channels then. When there's cerita melayu or some favorite musical program, the front verandah of that FA quarters where we live in, will be packed with the peneroka and their children. I see that my father has adopted that friendly and familiar relationship with some of the settlers. We open the door so they can tumpang tengok. Sometimes the program ends abruptly and the whole Felda living quarters in that scheme went blackout as the main generator supplying the power, which even then was only during the evening, ran out of fuel. Most of the settlers’ houses were still using kerosene lamp or lampu gasoline.

Works available in that Rancangan Tanah Kelapa Sawit scheme was from kahwin bunga which were mostly done by settlers' wives accompanied by their children, boys and girls as young as 12 years old. Also membaja, menebas lorong, menanam anak kelapa sawit etc and the more challenging of harvesting and pruning of the palm trees using the chok. Depending on the terrain, sometime you will have to pikul the heavy laden fruit bunch either uphill or downhill and placed them on to the platform by the tanah merah roadside and later heave them onto a trailer pulled by a tractor. Wages for casual labourer or a more civilised term, workers like me varies from RM 1.90 to RM 2.90 per kong and the most I ever earned was about RM 50 a month during the end of the year school break and while waiting for the form five exam result. That hard earned money also helps to pay for my school fees which was due, in order for me to collect my school certs.!

So, daily except Sunday, dressed in an oversize remnant of my father’s army jungle green shirt and with his jungle boot, I will go to the assembly area where some of the co-workers have to walk or cycle from few kilometers away for the early morning roll call. The mandor will record the attendance on the assigned work. Then about thirty to fifty of us will climb on board onto a trailer where we will be ferried miles away to Felda Sungai Tengi, another Felda scheme to be developed. While the women and children will sit on the floorboard, the men and boys sat around the wooden plank side board of the trailer facing inside and some of them will stand or sit and resting on the big mudguard of the tractor that pulls the trailer. You can imagine the bumpy ride all the way through the jalan tanah merah and with all the dramas especially with the women and girls giggling among them. The morning sun was already high up when we reached and the various group dispersed on to their various work.

On one occasion, I was in a group with about ten of us and doing planting. One thing about the kelapa sawit is that it is easy to grow. You sepak pun dia akan tumbuh jugak however to pikul the already matured six footer nursery plant by the big polytene bag with its duri on to a hill through a slope of sometime over 100 yards up, is bukan calang calang punya kerja.. bang. Likewise when you do membaja where you have to carry the sack right up to the end of the lorong that sometime ends either on top of the almost barren hill or down towards the swamp. Through experience you can tell the amount of fertilizers to be carried as the distance and number of trees are recorded at the platform. Also you can split away some of the earth in that polytene bag when you carry the nursery plant for planting.. ringanlah sedikit.

Ku jejaki lembah belukar di-sana. Luas terbentang tiada bertepi. Tak ku hiraukan panas hujan melanda. Semua bagiku.. tak bererti. Hanya satu tujuan untuk mencari.., setangkai bunga pujaan hati. Namun apa setelah aku dapati., kumbang lain menghisap madunya. Satelah madu musnah Sang Kumbang pergi, tinggalkan bunga layu begitu saja. Bunga pujaan tampak tiada berseri.., lemah terkulai tak lagi berdaya..

During the ceremony of that passing out parade, I could spot my parent sitting among the guests and my father being a CSM must be watching my every move and like your parents too, they must be feeling proud of their son achievement.

How time marches on, only just few years before that, I used to envy some of the young officers of the 4 Malay Regiment, driving their sport cars along the long row quarters of Majidee Barrack where we stayed. Some of the prominent young officers then were Gen Dato Che Md Noor, mantan PTD and footballer Lt Gen Dato Azzuddin, mantan DMI. Prior to that the long row was occupied by the British and the 4 RMR senior NCOs' quarters was at block sembilan which was near to the NAAFI and the AKC theatre. From 1963 to 1965, twice on occasion that 4 RMR served about nine months stint in East Malaysia i.e. in Sarawak, leaving families behind. Apalah pula nasibnya keluarga anak anak prebet or corporal yang duduk di block hitam near the rifle range on the way to Bakar Batu. Block sarjan pula berhampiran dengan gate berhadapan jalan Tebrau berhampiran dengan Kampung Tahi but now known as Kampung Setanggi.

Oleh kerana kesempitan, I spent my standard two and three primary schooling, in my kampung which is near to pekan Kati with my grandmother, as my parent and the other siblings were at Kem Mentakap and joint them later when 4 RMR moved to JB. I took the early Alex bus no 53 daily to go to the market which was then situated along and on top of the Sungai Segget, adjacent to the JB railway station to buy tauge, tauhu, udang etc so my mother will prepare meehun and nasi lemak while I go and mengaji qur'an. I will then go and sell them at the NAAFI immediately after my class ugama at the madrasah. Engkau orang mana pernah buat kerja ini semua and I tell you., my mother makes the best nasi lemak, meehun and kuih lopeh, as hardly half an hour later, everything lesap. Some time the Indian worker at the NAAFI who I called him ane, takut orang lain beli habis, immediately took both bakul inside and return them back empty, together with the botol kosong bekas ayer gula Melaka for the kuih lopeh and with the money. The NAAFI was buzzling with activity then with the Mat Saleh mem came as far as Woodland especially when nearing festive season like the Christmas.

My mother gave me 30 cent untuk tambang dua kali bas untuk pergi sekolah sebelah petang. I saved ten cent by stopping half way near the Police Depot and walk across the railway line, into Jalan Ngee Heng and to my primary school.

I used to merayau around the Kem and my favourate places were the Corporal Club to watch Tv and the cookhouse just beside it, to collect nasi lebih untuk bagi makan ayam as we have a small chicken coop behind the quarters where I'm in charge to jaga the ayam. Also at the open incinerator near the armskote to search for radio set batteries before they burn them where I will sell it for 50 cent per battery at my school. I spent the money buying Dandy and Bueno magazines. Later when I'm already into secondary school and more matured, occasionally I will buy the Fanfare magazine and will used the pin ups of pop stars that came along with it for my crocodile file cover, to carry my books and for style, I don't use school bag anymore. Some of the pin up pictures were the Small Faces, The Who, The Yard birds, Animals’ famed, ‘house of the rising sun’ where I first learn to change chords, etc and if I am to tell you more., people like Rashid Jusco and the AFATS or Basri for that matter won't be able to know and of course the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were already common. Sharifah Aini who was in the same class and school with my wife, A. Rahman Hassan where some of his band members, Orkes Nirwana were from the same secondary school, Sekolah Dato Jaafar where I was and A. Rahman Onn were some of those JB's pop yeh yeh icons then. Che gu Mokhtar, the husband to Orkid Abdullah (penawar rindu) was one of the teachers and sometime I'd bumped into Noor Azizah, the actress when I boarded a bus from my school at the Police Depot as her father was one of the senior Police officers there. My teacher during Form one was the adorable Miss Kuok, a family member of the Kuok Brothers business tycoon.

I received a letter with a second-class warrant ticket for the Pre Octu interview in PD while staying and working at the Felda Scheme. My father introduced me to Skot Mat Said, a tough Komando like guy who was also an FA at the rancangan Felda Sungai Dusun, as he went for the interview earlier and had already qualified. Mat Said gave me tips on what to expect during the interview. He stressed that I concentrate on the easier questions during the IQ test and sure enough almost half the candidates failed that first test. Mat Said however joined Mat Matahari, Dollah Panjang, Hamzah Panjang, Supiansuri and scores of others for reasons of their own, to balik kampung. Perhaps due to the nature of his job character in the army and I’m being the eldest son, though a caring and loving father as he is, my father does not show his affection openly to me or to his children especially to the older ones. I have four other brothers and a sister.

There was an incident when after finishing work or kong, the other workers and me had to walk few miles in the blazing sun to a junction at the main road where the rest of the workers will Rv for the transport tractor to take us home. In my group, there was a chap who was also having the same name as mine. A small built Zainal, who was probably about my age and he was a joyous type. Every time when we walk home, he was always few steps ahead of us and singing a favorite song of that time : Guantanamera except with a changed wording of Jalan Tanah Merah instead as like the road we were walking or traveling which in the heat will be dusty. Being a small guy he likes to sit on the mudguard while holding on to the steel frame of the tractor's canopy. Tired and fatigue everybody was to themselves when suddenly I felt a big bump under the wheel of the trailer that I was sitting on, followed by screaming., ya Allah, by some of the women. The tractor stop immediately and I turned towards the road and saw a body laid motionless on the dirt road. We rushed to look and were shocked to see Zainal with blood oozing from his nose, ears and mouth. He died almost instantly as the trailer ran over his shoulder, neck and part of his head. I saw the tractor's signal light scattered on the track and imagined that Zainal must have been leaning on it when it broke and gave way and he slipped down under the trailer. MasyaAllah.

I was resting near some bushes by the jalan tanah merah when after about more than an hour later, a police Land Rover came and stop nearby. Together with a policeman I also saw my father came out of the Police vehicle and I was wondering, why him of all the people, came with the police to investigate.  He walked hurriedly towards the tractor and looked concern. There was a sense of respect by the workers towards him and for me to work in the rancangan, I felt rather shy on that status. I stood up to make my present felt and I saw him glancing at me and looking surprised and while pointing at me, he kind of looked relieved. It was only much later that I realised and knew that the news on the accident broke out to his office and he was told that a worker by the name of Zainal has died and he thought that was his dear son. Any other father in the first instant would have hug, pat you on the shoulder or at least asked how you've been but not this ex-warrant officer, father of mine and he proceed to inspect the corpse and then I saw him berdoa beside the unfortunate Zainal.

My father took me to Tanjung Malim town to buy attires needed for the interview and later we went to Jalan Ampang to meet Mubin Sheppard who prepares and signed a letter of recommendation for the interview. Tan Sri Dato Hj Mubin Sheppard known also for his Tunang Pak Dukun was the Pengerusi of Veteran at that time. When he sent me to the railway station for me to report for training in Sebatang Karah, he told me, 'cubalah bebenor.. tanya le Mak kamu.,  Aku dulu lepas rekrut., dah pakai arm band L/Kpl.' Just that few words of encouragement from him as he was one the best recruits during his time and later became instructor at the PLR in PD. My father rose from the rank in Felda and retired mind you, as Senior Manager in one of the rancangan. I am proud and happy to see that roads leading and around the rancangan Felda Kahang Selatan where I went for my nephew’s wedding, semuanya adalah jalan batu dan tar, compared to the Guantanamera of the LKTP in Tanjung Malim dahulu and all the houses are renovated bungalows dan penerokanya pula sekarang sudah hidup dengan aman, mewah dan bahagia. My nephew married a graduate, anak seorang peneroka yang sungguh berbesar hati yang kami datang dengan diarak oleh kompang Johor with that familiar seven boom base drumbeat.

Kasihnya Ibu., membawa ke syurga, Kasihnya saudara.. masa berada. Berkorban nyawa, tanda kasihnya. Berkorban raga.. rela binasa.

Kasihnya Ayah.. sanggupkah berpisah. Dan kasih anaknya.. berkorban nyawa. Biar lah jiwa, akan tersiksa. Ikhlas dan rela.. asalkan bahagia. Surely you know where that came from. Ya Allah Ya Tuhanku, Engkau ampunkan lah akan dosa dosa ibu bapaku dan kasihkan lah mereka sebagaimana mereka menyayangi ku semasa aku kecil. Amin ya Rabbul 'Alamin'.
