Brave men don't cry

Pengorbanan Orang Lama

We all know that the court case regarding the Mohicans was postponed as reported in one of the Malay dailies and before that I spoke to among others, Mej Razali Martarsha of Regular 14, Col Akram of Regular 15, and Mahmud Kamsani of Regular 16, just to know of the outcome. Razali and Akram were both commissioned from the RMA Sandhurst in the UK while Mahmud Kamsani was the best Cadet or recipient of the sword of honour in RMC. The court case aside, I was told that they have a meeting after that and surprisingly there was a suggestion from them to take the matter to the highest authority. This was confirmed by Zul of Regular 15, Skot 21, Mohamad Embong and Skot Wan Ramli. I told them that I have done that and to avoid double billing and duplication I advice them to refer to my blog. Please see an SMS excerpt on the following from AKSPA.

From the conversation I had with most of them who were not aware of what I have done and were also not in my emailing list, the tones of their grouses were similar and familiar of, especially amongst Skot 22. At the end of 2006 most of Skot 22 who were not promoted to full Col got themselves retired from the service. Let's back track and see what I’ve wrote then. Before that, as last third Sunday of June was Father’s Day let’s, dedicates this song to our loved one.

Here are what I wrote: Come 2007, no one among us is younger than 53 years old and as such those who has attained to the rank of Lt Col, gracefully with pride and honour has to bow and bid farewell to their distinguished service with the Armed Forces. Those who crossed the 53 barriers, will continue to carry the banner to their final assault. So all the best to Skot and Dato Dato : Shahbani, Kamarudin Lat, Fazlur, Salim, Shukur, Khairul and gang and for those who had just retired or pencen.. welcome to the club and please bear in mine that I am one of the most senior among you.. so tolong respect sikit. During our younger days, I remember a Sharifah Aini's song : 'Berkembang dan mewangi.. perjuangan yang dikau beri' and towards the end, the lyric goes: 'Waspada gerak geri.. bentengkan lah nusantara ini'.

A good therapy as Lt Kol Johar Signal (R) has said, kadang kadang kena cerita pasal askar from time to time. A bit cerita pasal Gen George Patton nicknamed, Old blood and Guts, a name given for him after a reporter misquoted his statement that it takes blood and brains to win a war. But history has left the image of a brilliant military leader whose record was also marred by insubordination and some period of apparent instability. Patton was not known for his sense of humour and has caused political irritation and was critised such as the Sicily slapping incident. While visiting hospitals and commending wounded soldiers, he slapped and verbally abused two soldiers whom he thought were exhibiting cowardly behavior where they were actually suffering from shell shock and the other though had no visible wound was subsequently found to have Malaria.

Gen Eisenhower though six years junior to Patton, eventually rose through the rank and became a five star General and surpassed Patton who once commanded him. Eisenhower met privately with Patton over the incident and reprimanded him. Expecting the worst, tough as he is and stand to his action, Patton said, 'Brave men don't cry'. However when Eisenhower reassured Patton that he would not be sent home to the US for his conduct and requested him to resume command, Patton cried and Eisensower remarked, 'see.. how quick you George'. Historian speculated that, had it been anybody other than Eisenhower, Patton would have been demoted and court martialed.

You all know that some of our retired Skots especially those Majors, pursued their career with PLKN, training youth in various camps. However for some reason only best known to the Govt, come 2007 unfortunately some of them were not called to report for duty. So during the transitional period, they communicated and console each other with perception and high hope that the second group would be called later also in anticipation that they will also be getting backdated in pay on their previous service.

They thought their hope and prayer answered when they received letter from Mindef for an interview and so, last Jan 26, six of them with their best dressing marched all the way to Mindef. One of them related to me, 'Engkau tahu Nal.. dah lah tak ada seorang pun pegawai yang sambut kami, cuma staff yang biasa sahaja yang kemudian memberitahu kami bahawa kami dipanggil sebenarnya untuk diberi penghargaan dan perkhidmatan kami tidak diperlukan lagi dan setiap seorang diberi envelope mengandungi RM50 sahaja’. One of them a Capt, cried and said, 'Apalah yang nak ku cakapkan pada anak bini aku nanti'.

Sedih dan hiba kadang kadang bila kita dengar cerita mengenai kawan kawan kita ini. Not only Patton, even Hitler would also be crying, listening to cerita dia orang ini. Any one of you remember lagu Sharifah Aini yang diatas itu, sila paste kerana ianya banyak mengandungi kenangan dan ingatan semasa kita berkhidmat or perhaps you boleh tanya wife masing masing. Mungkin wife Capt tu pernah dengar dan nyanyi lagu ini and bayangkan betapa sedihnya bila seribu harapan kemenangan dihari bahagia mereka berkecai'.

Sdr Zainal..

Talking about pride and honour after dedicating your life in the Service, I dont think it's an appropriate word to use here in Malaysia or Malaysian Armed Forces for that matter..

I don’t know about the feeling of those Generals or Cols that have left or retired. But, as far as I am concerned, there’s nothing you can be proud of to show to your children or grandchildren (if any), except for some black and white pictures of us during the Sebatang Karah time, RMC or group photograph at the stairs by the Padang at PULADA during YO Weapon or Tactics course. Even though we pretty well know that some of us did really slog with their tears, sweat and blood well beyond one's expectation with an objective to serve the nation and to up keep the Armed Forces flag flying..but..the moment you left the Service. That’s what we will get.. like what our friends from the PLKN had.. That’s how cheap the ex-service men are.. Whom you want to talk to?

I used to meet a US Marine Warrant Officer, an American Chinese on board USS Tarawa somewhere in Okinawa who showed me a sword that he wanted to give it to his son. He said, I want my son to join the Navy or Marine and I'll give him this sword.. He’s so proud of his profession.. What more being a Marine. Another classic example is when I was visiting South African School of Signal in Pretoria, My CSO, Datuk Kamarul and I were invited to dinner hosted by an ex South African Paratrooper (Lt Col) at his ranch. He showed us his commendation letters, Testimonials, medals, souvenirs and farewell gifts from the Service and all the benefits that he is entitled as an ex-servicemen. The best hospital in South Africa is the AF Hospital. Even the president is treated there. All ex-servicemen are also entitled to.

.. Unlike here, if you go to RSAT and the F..#$% soldiers know, that you are an ex svc men.. You are damn lucky if u get a good morning wish from them.. or else.. 'Tunggu kejap encik eh !..'

.. I can’t imagine how the ORs faced this !..

Dear comrades,

I tend to agree with Johar and we should respect his feelings and discontentment with the army. But we have to accept the facts "power rules". Maybe you didn't have the agony of having to serve a boss who is 8 years junior to you and had once served under you. And may be you didn’t have the pleasure of how this power crazy officer treated you with impunity. How do you expect to leave the service with memories that worth remembering? To me the present lots of officers, seniors as well juniors are nothing but a bunch of guuun, kaki bodek, corrupted and above all no brain but claim to be super dupa. They are simply arrogant, self-centered and ningkamput. How I wish I could change my identity without the word pesara tentera. I wish the Malaysian army and the arty all the best with the present leaderships.

Pakistan Military Academy trained, Lt Kol Basri Arty (R) and daughter

Saya pun seperti tuan tuan. Sebagaimana dahulu, begitu jugalah sekarang, cuma hakikatnya hanyalah kerana saya lebih mengenali tuan tuan seperti yang pernah saya nyatakankan quote seperti putih tapak tangan saya unquote. You should know what that means. Uniknya orang lain atau bukan Skot tidak akan mampu untuk memahaminya secara mendalam sebagaimana saya telah mengusik hati tuan tuan kerana mereka tidak melalui dan menghayati liku liku pengalaman yang telah kita alami bersama, baik as Skot semasa kita diSebatang Karah, RMC or during service.

So when I said with pride and honour dan disertai pula dengan perkataan distinguished service, seperti juga ucapan salam diatas, ianya merupakan ucapan penghormatan tertinggi or salutation and compliment of the highest regards from me to tuan tuan yang telah berjaya mencapai ketahap yang boleh dibanggakan, at least in comparison to me and to the majority of our Skot. Diiringi pula dengan lagu, dedicated to all of us. You may not realise the nostagic value of that song, Kenalah sentimental sikit Skot.. kalau setiap kali marah nak bergaduh, lapar saja nak makan dan mengantuk je nak tidur.. baik jadi kucing.

At our age now, we can't afford to make mistake. Whatever yang you dapat sekarang, wang gratuiti or wang pencen, jagalah baik baik. Pencen saudara saudara itu nak kata sikit tak sikit, nak kata banyak sangat pun tak juga. Maklumlah dah tinggal setengah. Alhamdulillah, sekiranya in a fall back situation, adalah contigencies yang telah diatur. Hindarkan hidup dengan berhutang, InsyaAllah selamat. Silap silap kalau tak pandai urus kewangan kita, nanti boleh layak masuk PPRT.

Few days ago Skot Hj Rashid Adam Jurutera (AEON) came and both of us have lunch. I told him that I don't like giving advice as 'people who listen to other people's advice, always ends up in making other people's mistake'. Ayat alQur'an kalau diamati, lebih kapada memberi peringatan. 'Berilah peringatan sesungguhnya peringatan itu bermanfa'at atau dilain ayat yang selalu kita dengar, 'melainkan orang orang yang beriman dan beramal soleh yang ingat mengingati atas perkara yang haq dan sabar'. So you baca I pun baca and bila I lupa, you ingatkan saya. As said before, two things I don't meddle. What's Skot Leong Signal has said memang ada kebenarannya yaitu untuk kita kena 'muhasabah' diri kita sendiri. I'm surprised, that kind of advice came from him seperti juga as quoted by Amir KP 21 dalam kisah Skot Wan Ramli nak bela kambing yang ujian Allah bukan sahaja kapada orang Islam sahaja. Skot Zak Bass langsung tak mahu pergi interview. Skot Ramlay Idris juga bela kambing diKuala Pilah. Mungkin Gen Ismail 'fall in' tergelak sebab ramai sangat yang dia interview, semua nak jadi gembala dan mungkin dia teringat PT Instructor diSebatang Karah dahulu yang selalu berkata pada cadet, 'Engkau orang semua macam kambing biri biri, seekor mula melompat, yang lain semua nak melompat'.

As I said, semua orang ada kekecewaan mereka. Gen Patton terpaksa mengadap dan menangis dihadapan Gen Ike who was six years his junior and pernah served under him. Cuma Basri lama sikit, iaitu 8 tahun and as an Arty guy, the barrages of harassing bombardment from him towards the AF is not surprising. Look at Tun Dr. Mahadhir, once a Prime Minister and immediately after he steps down, orang yang tripod dia dahulu, mula condemned him dan bukan itu sahaja malah berbagai fitnah dan tohmahan. ‘Half past six’, that's what he refered to those leaders that succeeded him. Frust and at one time losing popularity, le left UMNO but has since rejoined. As Panglima Tentera Darat, the whole army stands to an attention in front of you but now, Gen Che Mat Noor told us, 'hari raya depa semua balik (his family) aku dok tinggai sorang'. Maj Gen Mahmud Sulaiman resigned his commission and retired from ATM when PM Hussein Onn bypassed him for promotion to CGS.

Think of this, Col Sanders would not be successful if he was a General. You inherit and carry that rank, so be proud of it. There are million and one things that you can be successful and be proud of as Pesara Tentera. I heard Pres. Bush speech during the State of Union, of course you know he is trying to convince the Congress for an additional 20K troops to Iraq but he also mentioned that USD 1.2 billion a year is required for the treatment of Malaria. So go and masuk hutan buat Ops cari quinine or dracular and go and supply to the US or perhaps more inteligently, we can sought the Govt agency yang bertanggung jawab untuk usaha penanaman secara scientific dengan makmal pemperosesan.. sikit punya boleh jadi kaya raya ke. Ini tak, balik balik nak cari akar Tongkat Ali or kita jadi contractor kat Mindef. Macam dah tak ada tempat lain. On borrowed words, probably you thinks, its better to work with the devil you know. Peluang niaga macam itu, L/Kpl pencen pun tahu and tak kan lah kita nak deprive dia orang untuk sama sama cari makan. It’s all about K economy. Knowledge my friend. Thomas Edison said, 'I've tried 99 times that doesn't work'. He did not say 'that failed' and when the one time that works, he enlightened the world.

Tepuk dada tanya iman. Ingat kata nabi Ibrahim a.s kapada tetamunya.

Amin Ya Rabbul 'Alamin'.

Wassalam,

Z
